You shouldn’t need a PhD in finance to pick a Medicare health plan!

One other consideration. How long has the company been in the Medical business? A bunch of casualty insurance companies with no Medigap history jumped in when their recent loss ratios in their other businesses jumped due to disaster claims. Since Medigap is standardized, they competed on price on initial offerings, planning to recoup with higher premiums later. Pick someone who has been a Medigap provider for at least 5 years.

Indiana is an attained age state. I found one community plan and that one also raised with age.
One the plus side, Indiana allows you to change on your birthday without medical questions.

Arizona, Florida, Missouri and Georgia prohibit attained age rating.

Keep in mind there are some community rated plans that build in a annual rate increase based on age from 65-85. For example most of the choices in my state SC were mostly attained age based and I had one community based to chose from. That was United Health Care, but the rate would go up 2% every year from the age first covered until age 85. So if entered at 65 to 85 that was a built in 40% compounded increase over time. Of course in community based rates can change based on overall costs +/- spread through out the community rate structure. Read the fine print on these plans. Would not be surprised if many community based insurers follow this same model.

I live in Nevada so I look at price every yr and can change if needed no underwriting based on the birthday rule.

You neglected to mention some of the finer points - the games that they play with the pricing.
I'm in PA. I signed up for the UHC/AARP plan. Decent rate at first. But what I found out is that UHC puts a discount on that plan, that they gradually pull back over time. So your initial rate looks much better than it is. In my case, the premium that I started paying in May 2025 has now gone up 42% in a little over a year.

Thanks for that clear explanation. I have an attained age Plan N in Pennsylvania and am now 75. While the increases based on attained age over the last few years are noteworthy, the general increases have been much larger. Just over.the last 2 years, my total policy premiums are up nearly 45%.

I'm in a community rated state, so Plan G prices are quite high. I went with a high deductible Plan G ($2950 max out of pocket, but 80% Part B coverage kicks in after annual Part B deductible.) Cost is $56/mo for BC/BS.

Interesting video. When we signed my wife up 3 yrs ago we had no idea of these 3 ratings. However, in FL with AARP/UHC you do not have a choice. They are all "Issue age" policies.
And let me tell you, they go up quite a bit every June.
