Joseph Smith said,

“The main object of gathering the people of god in any age to certain places is to build unto the Lord a house whereby He could reveal unto His people the ordinances of His house and the glories of His kingdom, and teach the people the way of salvation”

I think this is the reason we no longer need to gather to one singular location. We have temples all around the globe and our mission now is to gather everyone to their temple!

I attended a singles group at the OKC stake center, and a guest speaker revealed a story told to him, a man on an Indian Reservation entered a cave on the reservation and he came across ancient records he picked up some of the records, an angel appeared and told him that it was not time for the records to come forth and was told to put them back. The man got so scared he ran out of the cave with some of the records. He contacted someone from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint to go with him to put the records back and they did so.

I'm with Casey on the literal city of Zion being built in Jackson county. I'm 64 yrs old, when I was 13 my best friend's brother who was preparing for his mission received his patriarchal blessing in which he was told he was to study architecture because he was going to help design the city of Zion in Jackson county, MO. That was in approximately 1973 when that blessing was received.

And I think you’re both right! Zion is where we are, AND at some future point, I believe a city of Zion will be created based in Jackson County.
