Yup, grateful to have actually enjoyed social media when it was about your friends. That was between 2006 to 2015. Now “social” media is just media.

Their strategy has always been to ensure millions of people sign-up, then flood them with ads & branded content. This has always been the plan…they just hid it well, and now we are hooked. Great video essay!

I deleted Instagram and Facebook from my phone. I can open my laptop to scroll but I basically never do, and I feel better (emotionally/mentally) without it so readily available.

I prefer group chats over social feeds now cuz the group chat is way spicier 💅🏼 and no dumb ads every fkn 2 milliseconds

im gen z and i post maybe 1-2 times a year. Usually idc about what ppl think of me but when i post i get so anxious about likes and views.. it feels like it turns me into a different person so i just stopped. Ntm the only way you can see your friends posts these days is by going through everyones stories its annoying af!!

Social media used to feel like the internet's living room and bedroom. Now it's a shopping mall with court rooms in the parking lot.

the problem with social media started from the beginning. people posting things that feed their ego, such as your fancy, colorful meal or the fact that you bought a house or paid off your student loan. secondly, keeping tabs or spying on people is horrific. and this causes pressure on people to post the highlights of their lives, because they know their old acquaintances are trying to size them up. the 1990s was better.

I feel this soo much. It’s so sad. I used to be exhausted about posting. Now there’s no point. The same people like my posts there’s no new friends. It’s like a wasteland. A void. I liked reaching people. I liked inspiring others. But the algorithm changed that. I’m an analog kid anyways. It was nice while it lasted

As someone who is 49 my friends and I still use social media the old way. You can literally look at my dinner for tonight and the recipe it came from.

In my group of friends (we're millennials), we've moved everything to a private Discord server. We're all on it and that's where we post updates, pictures of our food, life updates, and where we hang out most days in voice calls. We don't want to put things out there for the public, like on instagram or facebook.

I think people are burnt out on the constant stimulation. The bar has also been raised so high that if you can't commit hours a day (added up) to perfect each shot or each video, then you just don't want to bother. Your feed is full of influencers making perfectly curated content that your spontaneous pics and vids with bad lighting or audio just end up looking like crap and bringing you down more. I think most people give up before they even start these days. The most people will do is post stories because they're ephemeral and you don't need it permanently on your page.

On top of that, the loss of a personalised feed means there's less healthy or unhealthy competition with people you know. Again, if you're seeing influencers all day then that's your frame of reference. It's their job to post so you can't compete with that. When it was just your social circle you were on the same level so sharing stuff meant something. Now posting feels like you're posting it into the void of the entire internet. Both too much and too little scrutiny. You could have anyone and everyone commenting, but mostly it's no one. So you feel tiny and meaningless. Not fun at all. Social media just isn't social anymore. It's just a glorified advertising space.
