Timetravel in this is basically they played the game the first time and he wished his brother away so he got stuck in the game. He flew into a wormhole that sent him back in time and because of that, things played out differently with his younger self and the timeline corrected itself by merging the other versions into the new ones. Everything up until the astronaut appeared was exactly like their first playthrough but his appearance changed how things played out after that.

10:58 Jon Favreau, the director of Zathura, was experiencing "digital fatigue" from the heavily CGI-laden movies of the early 2000s. He deliberately chose a hybrid approach that prioritized real, physical elements on set so the young actors would have tangible things to react to.

Zathura is HIGHLY underrated, it has the most accurate depiction of male sibling rivalry on film.

This movie feels less like a sequel and more like a standalone in the same universe.

I think Ashleigh would really like Evolution. It's a funny Sci-Fi.

The movies were kept separate so many don't even know it's the book's sequel. The author kept getting requests from fans for a Jumanji 2 but the author did not feel there was any new story to tell and it would only be a retread despite the first book ending with the neighbor boys walking off with the game presumably about to go on a new adventure. Then one day the author came across an old school board game box that featured two separate games so he decided to make Zathura the second board game in the box which allowed him to tell a new story with the same concept but with a different theme.

The smallest child is supposed to be annoying, that is what leads to the plot point of the older brother wanting to wish him away. It's a movie/book for kids, it's teaching a morale to children that if they got their wish to not have to deal with their annoying siblings anymore they would regret it.

The blend of practical and cgi effects was also very cost effective and this film ended up being the reason why the director Jon Favreau was selected to make Iron Man which benefited from similar cost saving effects as it was way before Disney was paying the bills.

A Dagwood sandwich is just a very tall sandwich. It's named after the character from the comic strip Blondie who would make said sandwiches.

I met Josh Hutcherson once. Nice guy. Kind of quiet, kind of shy. This was before Hunger Games, but I'd wager he's still humble.

To clarify, Walter the astronaut is from an alternate timeline where he wished Danny was never born. When another timeline of the game summoned an astronaut it opened a time sphincter as he said between his timeline and this one, allowing him to travel back through time and change how the game played out.
