As someone else mentioned, Linda Ronstadt and others have recorded this song but this remains my favorite version.

The meaning of the song should be taken in context with the entire album. The album "Desperado" tells the story of a gang of outlaws, the Doolin - Dalton gang. They were real bank robbers in the old west of the 1890's. The album uses these wild west outlaws as a metaphor for today's rock stars. How rock stars come into a town, to the happiness of some, but to the chagrin of others, and leaving with a lot of money. Like the outlaws of old, rock stars were usually a hard drinking bunch, and didn't have any real romantic attachments. That is what the album is about, and this song is just a small part of the overall story.
The song was recorded in London with musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra. Don Henley, the Eagles drummer and lead vocalist on this song has said that he was very intimidated singing in front of this world famous orchestra. He was 26 years old at the time, and the band was recording only their second album. It was also the first time with a prestigious orchestra providing backing music. Their producer only gave him two takes to record the vocals, something that Henley has said he was disappointed about. He felt that if he had more chances to record the lead vocal, he could have done it better. It's hard to believe that it could be done better than it was.

Hi you two, I'm 67 and was in a band that I played keyboards in he 1970s and at a break a guy asked if he could play my piano and I said of course. I didn't see he was blind and he sang and played this song beautifully

Linda Ronstadt covered it and made it more popular after the Eagles wrote and recorded it.
