My favorite OC was created purely to be a performative male. I love him. He is my loser son.

All of my OCs trauma are from my own experiences. It kinda helps me understand and get over the stuff that happen to me, through them. They just kinda grew into their own person as time goes by.

7:49 personally, I think the reason why people love Jinx so much is that she has many scenes where she's genuinely having a good time and enjoying things, meanwhile many people who overload their ocs with trauma have them acting miserable 24/7, which nobody likes. just my theory, I love this video thanks for helping!!!

I genuinely think if you want people to care about your characters, you gotta give them some meat and some story to chew on to really connect with your characters. More than just personality and aesthetics, I think it's important to give them a small story or scenario to show off who they are and what they're about.

A great stoic character example for me is Dr. House, he's edgy and grumpy but is also whitty and has a very big obsession with cheesy in universe medical dramas and detective book series made for teen girls. One of my favorite tropes, and makes him a whole lot more charming. Who would ever guess that someone so intelligent would like something so terribly written?

I’ve found that joining roleplays has really helped flesh my characters out. I don’t usually struggle with writing backstories or personalities, but sometimes I do get so used to my characters existing in the vacuum of my mind that I don’t even know how to approach how they’d act in mundane situations. Roleplaying requires writing a lot of dialogue and a more normal mundane scenarios than the more exciting ones you might think of in your head while you’re bored. It’s given me a much better idea of not only what shaped my characters, but how they’d act as people (or cats I guess; most of my OCs are cats LMAO). Plus roleplay and collaborative writing are so fun. I’ve made some super interesting plots with my characters that I never would have thought of by myself because of the new perspectives of other people, as well as working around their goals for their characters. For example, I knew I wanted one of my OCs to get into a relationship, and the person that agreed to do it with me had a plan for their character to eventually accidentally have kids. So now my character is gonna be a dad!! ❤❤ I never would have done that myself, but now that I am, I actually love the idea.

TYSM for this!! My main oc has a lot of trauma (bullied in school + close family death) but the point of my story is that you can keep living despite it and that it doesn’t define you.

As a young writer, one day I want to make a comic or light novel. But I'm so nervous I wanted to start small by posting my OCs. This is so helpful! I agree that a lot of people treat OCs like a "who can traumatize a character the most" contest, but then it doesn't mean anything. And now I feel much more confident posting my art online, thanks
