  thank you for this! i also agree on referencing concept art from your favorite films, and i would also recommend animated films in general! because animation requires drawing character’s faces so many times, animators will find solutions to express emotions with simplified shapes, emphasizing what’s needed to communicate that feeling to the viewer as best as they can.<br><br>one animator i’ve study quite often is glen keane, namely his work on tarzan — there’s videos of him breaking down his process and art, specifically in finding a way to animate a character without dialogue speaking for them. he’s masterful at subtly and silent moments in character acting, so his work is really useful. also films like prince of egypt and spider-verse where there are diverse head shapes and character designs to match, each with a mode of different expressions for those faces.

  Oh also something i can suggest is eyes/pupil sizes. I draw more &quot;cartoony&quot; so i make it a point to give characters tiny pupils when angry/suprised/scared and draw them bigger when sad/happy!<br>Or with my characters who have animal/nonhuman features (slit pupils, animal ears) i also reflect it with that. When they&apos;re pissed the pupils go extremely slim, and the ears will go up/down depending on what emotion they have.

  When I started watching anime again and ignoring the guilt I felt from &quot;wasting my time&quot; my art got a lot better and so did my expressions.<br>Just observing inspirations even without active practice is great.
