When using an analog toner, the 1st thing u do after hooking it up to the cable,<br>try your prob next to the device to make sure its working. Then move a couple feet away & test the cable again with your probe. If its still making noise, then u know its not plugged into an active switch. If the probe stops making noise, ( now u know that your cable is plugged into an active switch.) Lets assume this is a small place with everything ran back to this one switch. <br>Now all u have to do is go to the switch and test each cable on the switch that doesnt have any of the leds lit up for that port. Unplug any port that doesnt have any lights on & put your toner on the copper of the rj45s & it will scream when u get to the correct cable. U shouldnt have very many that arent lit up. Just do it one at a time & plug the cable back into the switch in the same port.
