US operations orders specifically directed that no Waffen SS personnel would be taken prisoner. This is the main reason Peiper’s sentence was reduced.

I sit here in 2026. I was born in 1955, and the Second World War felt much closer to us when we were growing up. I come to look at the men who fought in the war, regardless of the color of their uniform or the flags they served under. They all did their duty as it was understood to be at the time. Historians and critics have the advantage of hindsight and were not there, so they did not have to make decisions in the moment. The Second World War was a continuation of the First World War; while the first was largely static, the second was set in motion. It was never the soldiers who fought it; it was pretty much the political decisions made long before they were even born that led to it. The only thing anyone should take from it is its folly, and today the only difference is that the weapons don't miss; one airplane with one bomb does the work they couldn't do with 1000 bomber raids in 1943-45. Human beings have been warring with each other since time immemorial. It's human nature.

A lot of Wittman's kills wasn't even in tanks. He accomplish many of them with a Stugiii. On the Eastern Front where armoured combat was the fiercest.

Was I surprised by the inflation numbers for the German tank kills? Does that mean the Hans Rudel of the Luftwaffe in his Junkers 88 is credited with over 560 Russian tank kills... so do we take it that that too is inflated

A love/ hate relationship born out the Cold War. Allied Veterans hated them many did not accept the written and unwritten rules of engagement especially the SS. Nazi "brainwashing" especially for Hitler Jugend and mature SS formations were dismissed.
for example, in the Battle of Arnhem, a teenage SS machine gun crew set a position by a british field hospital firing at british paras. The British Doctor in charge- yelled at them in perfect german smacking them with a baton to " get out of here" the "kids" were shamed and quickly redeployed before mortar and artillery would hit the field hospital. True Story. The other theme was " the Good German" to politically include Germany into Europe both sides tried but in the West the new leadership needed their expertise. East Germany supposedly did not but did discreetly especially the Stasi( East Germany's secret police where former Gestapo agents were recruited). So the rehab of West and East Germany would logically include a splinter right wing political party trying to whitewash history.
please don't forget that after the Nazi crushed the Communist Party- many fled to Moscow and returned to govern East Germany. Even now, German Press has exposed nazi influence in German special forces albeit small. So it goes

If Germanyhad won the second World war they would have labelled the US army a criminal organisation, the US military killed more then the Germans ever killed half a million people died in the Dresden bombing

I would prefer that captions a photo as a Jagdtiger the image should actually be of a Jagdtiger. Next faux pas is showing Soviet T34 tanks while discussing Wittman in Normandy. At the film shown while speaking of the "new West German Army..." is laughable. I've seen enough slop. Hangover needs to get on the bandwagon and stay there.
