For all my yakkety yak, I do love these videos especially the 50s videos. You do do a great job. Thank you!

It can be interpreted that the social rules were oppressive but they also had a great function. Life was so hard back then. I don't know how my grandmother lived through those times and still kept her sanity. Having a daily expectation made women get up and put one foot in front of the other and carry on with life when all they wanted to do was to sink into despair and depression because their oldest son died in the war or they are going to have mustard sandwiches for dinner again that night. It was a form scaffolding that kept women together.

Also, back then, the men always wore a dress shirt and tie. Do you see those pictures of men standing around in dress shirts? That was for real. That is how they sat around the house after they came home from work. And when anyone came over, they always put on a jacket. People put much more emphasis on clothes and how they presented themselves than they do now. So, yes, the women always fixed themselves. We had a lot of people coming over that no one has now - there was the milkman, the bakery man, the Fuller brush man, the Avon lady, door-to-door sales people, neighbors, canvassers, religious people, other delivery people, etc. And we let them all in graciously. Now if someone comes to the door, we yell through the door with a .38 in our hands.

When my husband and I moved into an upscale neighborhood, the women came to me and insisted that I not mow my own lawn, while my husband was out of town on duty in the military. I asked why and they said that their husband were saying "well why don't you mow the yard like her". 😂
Now I live in a much more expensive upscale neighborhood, where they have their tiny yards mowed by pros. Everyone comes out into their yards and stares at me when I mow now.
Sorry people but I have only dance to my own drummer😅. It keeps me in shape
