MJ used the SM7 on Thriller, not the 57.

I've only ever heard the SM7 being referred to as the vocal mic on Thriller. Precursor to the SM7A and B

“Don’t buy Microphones based on hype”, then you recommend the u87, the most hyped microphone ever You lost me at Michael Jackson using an SM 57… as a public service announcement, please don’t listen to this guy. I’m really tired of misinformation.

I agree with most of what you said. Of the mics I have tried personally anyway. However.. the KM184 needs a certain distance to sound the best. Or at least blend it with something less aggressive. It’s so extraordinarily focused that it can become unpleasant if you don’t take time to place it correctly. By the way it sounds alright on guitar cab as well. I wouldn’t have thought so, but it does.

I preferred the u67 to the u87 when I tried both, but I only tried vocals, so you may have a point.

the best part of making mic mistakes is i have a lot to choose from because of those mistakes! it depends so much what type of voice someone has and the genre. for me i feel like the only thing that works on my voice is a u87 preferably the i not the ai. the c800 just collapses my low mids. but on other artists the u87 is one of the worst choices lol. depends.

SM7: Legendary engineer Bruce Swedien used the original, vintage Shure SM7 for Michael Jackson's lead vocals on tracks like "Billie Jean" and "Thriller". Where did you hear that he used an SM57?
