  His very last statement is worth noting: by how much is Iran going to win this war.<br><br>We don&apos;t know that yet. It remains to be seen. In play are the following situations:<br><br>1. Most importantly, whether the Gulf states conclude they have to have a far-reaching settlement with Iran, with mutual guarantees given by both sides. This is not a given. The states could decide they can live with a frozen conflict and a bare settlement if hostilities simply cease and minimally the passageway is opened in exchange for no US bases anywhere near the Gulf and no American blockade. That could be an outcome both sides can tolerate. On the other hand, even continual minimal hostilities could force the Gulf states to approach Tehran for a more complete agreement.<br>2. What level of loss the US can accept, ranging from a pretty extensive withdrawal to a more partial retreat. This goes all the way from Iraq to Oman. Some retreat is already baked in: the US isn&apos;t going to put new bases or rebuild in the Gulf; that was always tactically bad; too close to enemy fire, indefensible. But it could hope to retain bases deeper into Saudi, or Iraq, and certainly Israel, and maybe something along Oman&apos;s coast, at least some resupply logistics points. At issue is the future American ability to wage war in the region.<br>3. How far the Israeli position would be undermined if all the Muslim states (or most) reduce their exchanges with Israel, or actually turn into a collective opposition to Israel. In other words, how isolated will Israel become? What if the anti-Israel party in the US and in Europe gains popularity to the point that Israel finally has to yield on the question of the two-state solution?<br>4. Last, what kind of ascendancy does China reach if all the local players agree on China to replace the US as the great power broker and mediator in the region? This is not far-fetched. China does have reasonably good relations with all the parties, and it has not overplayed its hand by going all in for Iran, for instance. China plays a very careful diplomacy in the region. Its ultimate aim is mostly to ensure supplies from the region. It&apos;s not going to do military stuff in the region, either land, naval, or aerial.<br><br>So there are a ton of questions about the region to be untangled and resolved. I don&apos;t think Trump is the great leader able to deal with the consequences he has so unwittingly brought about.

  Trump is afraid of Houthis and refused to help Saudis - there is no way he is going to attack Iran that badly. The gulf of Eden and Strait of Hormuz will both get closed if he does anything serious.
