Our family always sang while they washed the dishes. I don’t want a dishwasher. I want to wash my dishes and sing.

I ordered this book a month ago and could not believe you had Dan Levitin on your podcast soon after. I need to restart playing the piano again. Thank you Dr Chaterjee

I recently visited my aunty who has severe dementia.( She asks who a person is every 5-10min). Not knowing how to connect, I proposed to sing praise music which she grew up on. She remembered all the songs without a reminder!! We sang for more than an hour, non stop. I am still pondering on that experience.

Our cat was stressed and over-grooming causing two half-dollar sized open wounds. I put on 24/7 soft music with kitty purring. He stopped over-grooming, his wounds healed, and his hair grew back!

Singing and dancing to music that makes me feel good has always given me that runner's high while doing it, and then tranquility when I am done. It was not until years later, after trying other types of therapy, that I came to the conclusion that my singing and dancing was "my" therapy. Glad you are talking about it.

My wife was in a nursing home. FTD. All on her floor had some type of dementia. She and most of the others loved the daily hour or so of music mostly from 50s and 60s. No physical changes but definitely made them happy

Music as medicine started before language where people who listened to birdsong felt calm ...natrual therapy. The sound of rain can give me a good sleep.

I've had two people in my life affected by dementia, both of whom loved the playlists I put together for them. I only listed songs that I knew they loved and could sing along to. Also, one of them loved dancing to the music, which I found quite wonderful.

another great episode thank you!!! the nostalgic music helping Alzheimer's patients reminded me of Ellen Langer's experiments/studies with the older community elders and putting them in an environment with everything 20 years earlier (including the music) and how this helped the participants improve cognitively, physically, etc.... thank you again for all you do!!

I KNOW THIS IS TRUTH ❤ As a musician, l have realized older professional musicians DO NOT become demented. They play until they die, extraordinary music, and mainly their bodies create the music without thinking. Having just found 50 year old tapes from my childhood, singing harmony with my sisters, all those songs are a part of me and bring joy❣

As an activities director working with a nurse practitioner and the nurses aids, we decided to get the people sitting in front of the television eight hours a day to sing. It took a while we had to figure out which songs were part of their history. One song it’s a grand old flag was the favorite of a music teacher and once we got them started singing, she would sometimes just start singing in the whole group would join her. But her nurses aids and other others it meant that these people clearly needed to still be in the dementia unit, but were easier to work with easier to get to stand up and Walk and would sometimes talk to each other
