This movie has an uncanny way of making you feel like you’re in a real youth mental institution. This is exactly how it was when I was hospitalized

Hi! I’m the art director on this. I pranked the hell out of Joe during this shoot. The sketches of the Van Gogh are mine. This was shot at what now is part of Cal State, an old mental hospital. The same hospital Charlie Manson was in for his evaluation prior to his trial. Manson was in the 1920’s buildings, we shot most of Manic in the newer children’s separate parts. The cast was the best. Everyone of them excellent to work with.

At the end, while Lyle waits for the bus, thinking he has finally achieved freedom, a reality check hits him when he sees Van Gogh’s painting on the bus. He remembers the discussion between Sara and Chad about the meaning of the painting. Sara thinks it represents real freedom and hope; she wants to be like the birds in the painting, flying wherever they want. On the other hand, Chad can only see nonsense, something that has a frame, something that ends, a path to nowhere.

Later, we see that Sara gets released while Chad ends up staying in the cage, repeating the cycle. He doesn’t want to live in a world he doesn’t understand (although I think he understands it very well; he is too self-aware of how messed up this world is, but he doesn’t think he has what it takes to confront it).

When Sara says, “All paintings are like that. So what?”, after watching the film, I think this phrase means something like, “Dude, this is life.” You can only see what you choose to see. The small frame you observe can be changed, but you have to do the work , something Dr. David Monroe tries to teach them throughout the entire movie. I also think the “So what?” is the perfect response to Chad’s favorite word, “why,” and his obsession with it (an infinite loop).

Finally, Lyle decides to fight back against his biggest adversary: himself. He takes the path in the painting, taking the first steps toward real freedom, but this time by his own choice, because Lyle understands that “wherever you’re going, you’re still going to be there.”

I loved this movie, it's my first time seeing it. It taught me so much about myself and my struggles with mentall illness.

Had to watch this multiple times to realize Kenny is there for perpetuating the same abuse his step father did onto other kids.

This era of independent films when I was a teenager is so beautiful and unmatched and i'm extremely grateful for it.

If anyone is wondering about the end, here's what sense I made of it:

When that girl is showing Chad the Van Gogh painting, trying to convince him that its beauty is real, and that such beauty means something (important), he gets annoyed and points out what lies outside the painting, namely Van Gogh's suicide. Chad is basically making the case that what is contained within the boundaries of the piece of art is outweighed by what is beyond its boundaries: Suffering and death. He recognizes its beauty, but he's afraid to look at it too long, lest his encounter with beauty weaken him, and thus make him more vulnerable to the harshness of life. The key moment is when he concludes that: "The road goes nowhere." It (beauty - light at the end of the road) is a will-o-the-wisp; the same harsh realities keep replaying, and if you spend too much time engaged in hope, all that will happen is you'll be blindsided (more painfully) by the pain and harm of life. And so he removes his vision from the painting. The psychologist has been trying to convince Lyle that he should confront his problems face-first, because no matter how he tries to avoid them, be it by acting violently or recklessly, or moving to Amsterdam, they'll be always with him, because, "no matter where you go, you'll be there,"; Lyle is ultimately his own problem - and how can you escape yourself? This sinks in when he's sitting at the bus stop and he sees the same Van Gogh painting Chad saw; the painting is an imagistic metaphor, which means: This road goes nowhere - aka, getting on this bus and running away will bring you nowhere. Its incredibly subtle.
