25 Near-Misses That Almost Ended America

What if I told you that the entire grand narrative of American history—the one you were tested on in high school—is held together by little more than duct tape, sheer luck, and a security guard who happened to notice a bit of tape on a door? We like to think that history is a smooth, inevitable arc toward progress. We like to believe that George Washington was destined to be President, that the Union was always going to win, and that democracy is too big to fail. But the reality is far messier, weirder, and frankly, a bit more terrifying. Tonight, we’re stepping away from the "inevitable" victories and looking at the close calls. These are the twenty-five moments when one different choice, one inch of bullet travel, or one person simply saying "no" kept the entire American experiment from careening into a nightmare alternate timeline. From a cigar-wrapped document that saved the Union to a Cold War submarine officer who single-handedly prevented a nuclear winter, these aren't just footnotes. They are the reasons we're still here. So, dim the lights. Adjust your pillow. Let’s talk about all the times America almost ceased to exist as we know it while you drift off into a well-deserved sleep. In this video, we explore: The 1801 electoral tie that nearly sparked a civil war before the country was 30 years old. How three misplaced cigars changed the outcome of the Civil War. The moment a security guard’s hunch at the Watergate complex changed the Presidency forever. The "Final No" on a Soviet submarine that prevented the end of civilization. (And 21 other times we narrowly escaped historical disaster). ABOUT SLEEPY AMERICAN HISTORY: We produce long-form, relaxed historical documentaries designed for late-night listening.
