That’s basically the definition of financial independence: when your investments, pension, passive income, or accumulated wealth reliably cover your lifestyle, you stop having to exchange your remaining time for money.

And once the kids are grown and the major obligations are handled, the equation changes even more. Hobbies, travel, relationships, fitness, learning—or simply doing absolutely nothing—become choices rather than things squeezed around a job.

The real luxury isn’t the penthouse. It’s owning your time! And - he’s not paying for the fun… he’s paying them to leave!

10k a month in Colombia from passive income is a fortune. How he chooses to spend his free time is his business.

When you lease you can walk away with little consequence whenever you want. When you own its not that easy. He's keeping it casual and on his terms.

Frankly, as you are talking I’m just in awe you are passing by an amazing and exotic tree right between the sidewalk and the street. A little after 5th minute of the video you pass a tree that in my opinion you could stand by it and talk about it’s unique beauty and age. Also right at the 8th minute you’re in front of another such beautiful tree!

I'm neither American nor Colombian, but I love your advice. I don't understand how some people can be so careless with their money.

I knew the owner as well. He was a wonderful, lively guy. I always enjoyed the food and atmosphere at that Greek restaurant. That said, the clientele was almost exclusively foreigners. I think that because the restaurant was located in the heart of Lleras, he assumed it made the most sense to cater primarily to the foreign crowd.

That kind of income puts him in the top 1% and I rather doubt the exchange rate variations will make a big difference. But given he won't learn Spanish, I'd suggest he move to the Phillipines and live in one of their upscale bubbles like Bonifacio Global City. He'd be living like a king.
