Jesus Wasn't Copied: What the Myths Actually Say (Buddha, Dionysus, Zoroaster, Romulus)

“Jesus was copied from Buddha, Dionysus, Zoroaster, and Romulus.” It’s one of the most repeated claims online, and it collapses the moment you actually open the primary sources. In this video, I go figure by figure and compare the popular talking points to what the texts really say. Was Jesus just a recycled version of earlier gods and heroes? It’s a claim you’ll find in memes, documentaries, and comment sections everywhere. But the “parallels” almost always depend on describing the other figures in deliberately Christian vocabulary — virgin birth, temptation, trial, resurrection — and hoping nobody checks. So let’s check. BUDDHA: His mother’s conception involves a prophetic dream, not a virgin birth, and it was never claimed to be one. The famous “temptation by Mara” is far more fluid than people admit: some of our earliest accounts of Siddhartha’s quest in the Pali Canon, including ones where he recounts his own doubts and fears, don’t mention Mara at all. The temptation material shows up as poetic and allegorical imagery, later dramatized by artists into spectacular battles. We look at the hosts of Mara in the Padhāna Sutta —the three daughters, Craving, Boredom, and Passion—and why psychological defenses against them point strongly toward allegory. DIONYSUS: There isn’t one birth story; there are several, and they contradict each other. Zagreus, the Titans, the rescued heart, Semele and the flames, Zeus's thigh, competing Thracian traditions. We cover why “turning water into wine” isn’t the unique parallel people think, why Pentheus in The Bacchae is nothing like Pontius Pilate (it’s a personal grudge, not a trial), and why Dionysus is reborn, not resurrected. Bonus: the “suffering god” and “god of joyful resurrection” framings are largely modern, owing a lot more to the 1800s and Nietzsche than to antiquity. 🔥 ZOROASTER: Yes, Zoroastrianism influenced Judaism, but how much is genuinely debated, and much of it looks like acceleration of ideas already present rather than importation. We cover why so much popular discussion is running on scholarship from the 1980s or earlier, the monotheism/dualism/henotheism question, when the Avesta was actually compiled, why the Zoroastrian afterlife is temporary and purifying rather than eternal, and the crucial detail: Zoroaster isn’t the one who returns; the Saoshyants are, and that material largely develops between the 9th and 12th centuries. Plus a quick word on Manichaeism as a deliberate synthesis religion. ROMULUS: The Mars parentage is only one version among many. Some accounts have two human parents, some a phantom, some her uncle in armor. Not every account calls Rhea Silvia a Vestal virgin as people assume; not every version includes the she-wolf; and the twins never actually set out to take a throne. They were restoring their grandfather Numitor. And Romulus’s “ascension”? Livy is writing roughly 700 years later, recording competing traditions and telling you which one he finds credible. He notes the storm, the belief in apotheosis, the rumor of senators tearing him apart, and the testimony of Proculus Julius, which Livy himself frames with notable reserve. Also: Lucretius is regularly misquoted here; his point is about human credulity in general, not this story. The through-line: these traditions are messy, multi-versioned, develop across centuries, and are often post-Christian in the exact details that supposedly prove borrowing. Real comparative religion is interesting. The copycat thesis is just bad sourcing with confidence. Which “parallel” did you hear first, and did anyone ever show you the source?
