Pi0h1 here.
The version of Midnight Animal you reviewed with all the shit dialogue and ugly title screen is not made by Spencer Yan. It was made by some russian modder who wanted to remake Midnight Animal. The writing of that remake is entirely original and had nothing to do with Spencer's plans for Midnight Animal. There were tons of copycats since the source code was publicly available. (This is what Spencer referred to when he said on the Eurogamer article that people were scavenging his code).
The one you briefly mentioned at 23:39 is the legitimate Document of Midnight Animal. I was in the same chat as Spencer when he came up with Document of Midnight Animal and I can confirm the "This isn't for you" message was, in a sense, directed towards the people making Midnight Animal copycats.
Document of Midnight Animal has no dialogue or story. Exegesis is where all the story elements went in. He was tired of people misinterpreting his work through the copycats so he separated the gameplay and story elements into two different games to show what his true intentions and abilities were. Exegesis is a reflection of his actual writing skills whereas Document is a reflection of his actual skills as a game designer.

The absolute irony of the people leaving angry and hateful comments about the game's directional shift... when you take a second to look at their names and steam avatars...

I love how so many of the commenters calling him a degenerate weeaboo have anime character avatars.

No one forced him to make Midnight Animal, they just pressured him into making it how they wanted it

I remember speaking to Spencer Yan a while ago, when I was trying to create my own mod for Hotline Miami. This was a little bit before the whole Midnight Animal backlash from the HLM community, and he was a super nice dude and helped out a lot. I wish him all the best.

I feel so bad for Spencer, poor guy had to go through the hate and shame. Anime or not, midnight animal had great potential

The only positive thing in this is that he didn’t get to work at Ubisoft

i personally say Yan was on to something with the idea of a life sim and Hotline Miami being mix. it really would had been interesting to see both chaotic fast nature and quiet slow peacefulness play out. it sucks that it didn't come prominence but regardless i hope Yan life is better now.
