Matthew Perry was back in a rehab facility during this time, he was able to come in for filming but they had to cut him out of the main storyline for a while

I love how after he said Rachel at the altar, they just gave Ross the weirdest storylines possible. 😂 David makes it work somehow, he’s such a good actor.

The great thing about Joey is that once he realizes he's blown it he doesn't keep trying.

It's an (understandable) misconception that Matthew was in rehab during this season. In fact this was the only season he was clean and sober & due to this big change the writers and execs on Friends wanted to help him adjust to this change by reducing his time on the show and batch shooting his scenes wherever possible. Matthew said in his book that Friends always tried to help him and expressed his gratitude. Between S7 & S8 was his previous stint in rehab but in S9 he said he was better for the 1st time in years noting you can track his sobriety with his weight through Friends but by S9 he had reached a stability

Ross has never & will never say this phrase. The meme just works for the particular pose that David Schwimmer does in that particular promotional character photo and now people remember it (wrongly) differently like a Mandela effect 👍

Ross didn't choose the name Vikram arbitrarily. Vikram (played by Nikhil Chinapa) was the Ross stand-in in the Hindi language remake of Friends called "Hello Friends" in India, which ran from 1999 to 2000.

Matthew was filming the sequel of the movie "the whole nine yards" with bruce willis and he also guest-starred in several episodes of "the west wing"
: i think he even got an emmy nomination for it as best guest actor in a drama.
His guest stint was so well received that the show wanted to bring him for more episodes but he was obviously still committed to Friends

His last time in rehab (during the friends years) was during the filming of s7 (which also explains why he had a bit less screentime than usual in that season). But from s8 til the last season, he was fully clean and sober
