  The Greek nobility were always a minority in Bactria, they were like the British in India. A colonial officer/ Administrator class. If they were in civil war with each other, It would have given the native Bactrians an easy chance to rebel. These native hillmen would have looted but not had the knowledge to build anything new. Then perhaps a mobile tribe of horse nomads from the north burned the city. In an ancient version of what soviet mobile tanks did, then the local Mujahedeen once again looted, but have no knowledge to build a new. The story keeps repeating down the ages. Like a Greek tragedy. Fascinating.

  That's a very good theory - and great graphics - the commercial looting is tragic and I bet the Russians in the 70's and 80's did some serious digging. The present day chaotic autocratic mining industry is this area perfectly illustrates the  Highland Afghan culture - they have a very greedy, violent licentious streak.
