  Hallberg Rassey has always been my dream boat..not my budget, but if the Lottery hits, thats what I&apos;ll be sitting on while I write my resignation letter ;) I love the numbers crunch and every boat I look at gets a trip to Sailboat Data so Thank you for the great deep dive, I really enjoyed it!

  I met plucky in Manila Australia years ago we were learning how to paraglide. I thought he was a cool dude back then years later I saw his sailing channel but we both had similar dreams I&apos;m glad he followed through with his.

  Cruising on a x yacht ain&apos;t tough at all. &nbsp;They are so much fun to sail - great if you like going fast. &nbsp;Great live aboards too. &nbsp;High latitude stuff not what you want but horses for courses. &nbsp;Whilst sailing around the world there can be many more light wind days that battling to windward.<br>Good work boys.👊

  There&apos;s a lot in this discussion I could comment on. But I&apos;ll limit my comments on just one item.<br><br>That is ballast to displacement ratio.<br><br>When reading this on Sailboat Data, I think you should consider two other data points. The first is the type of keel. If it is described as a &quot;bulb keel&quot;, you know that most of the ballast is at the very bottom of the keel, as much as 90%. This means the ballast is more effective than if it were spread through the keel.<br><br>The second data point is draft. The ballast on a deep keel is usually more effective than that on a shallower keel. The exception to this is with long keels .<br><br>In the old days, when boats were built out of wood, the keel was made up of stacked timbers, with the ballast slug, made of iron or lead, on the very bottom.<br><br>It is best to look at the profile drawing, while considering this, so you can see the profile proportions of the keel. This, along with the keel type and draft, can tell you a lot more than the ballast displacement number alone.<br><br>An early 20th century design, known as the Islander yawl, had a ballast slug that was only about 15% of its displacement. This was very misleading, because the vast amount of timber above it, making up most of the keel, was not counted. Even when absolutely dry, &nbsp;its weight was considerable. The boat had nearly a full length keel. Once I added up the likely weight of all this lumber, I came up with an adjustable Ballast/displacement ratio of roughly 33%.
