  I've been pretty successful trapping swarms. I use a 10 frame box, well used, on top of an old shallow with a 1/4" plywood bottom. 1 frame of old brood comb and 4 or 5 frames with starter strips and wire. Standard tops. I use lemon grass oil as a lure. Placed on a tree or whatever no more than 5' off the ground, I'm old and don't want to break myself. Using old equipment is the key and placement near cleared right of ways helps. On the edge of woods near open fields. If all you have is new, chare the inside and boil some old brood comb and paint the inside with the liquid. Make the inside of that box smell like bees just left.

  I wish I saw the Bohemia Bees plans sooner. I just finished the video and it’s definitely a superior box in simplicity and construction quality. I originally went with the modified D. Coates nuc box plans Lee Bussy posted on BeeSource when I started my swarm traps a few weeks ago. They are the same size and did an excellent job of utilizing a full sheet of 15/32 plywood, but I’ll definitely be building the Bohemia Bees version whenever I build more.

  Caugh 20 swarms last year in North PA.. Have caught swarms in 40 liter and smaller BUT nothing in Large boxes and Nothing in 5 gallon buckets. Does NOT matter how high you put up traps as bears will climb up to them so just leave them at 6 foot. Lost FOURTEEN traps to bears in 2024. They shred the traps into splinters but only lick the frames clean. Also notice thatr if bees are in trap first they don't care if ants come in BUT bees will NOT go into trap if ants are already using the trap as a home.  Never had a bird go into trap but flying squirrells go in and make a nest which I don't mind as our owls kill most flying squirrels.
