Never Set Fence Posts in Concrete Again!

  I pull old fence posts in concrete all the time. The trick is to use two high lift jacks, one on each side. Your problem here is your side loading the post in the concrete, it's binding and so the harder you lift the more it binds. Two jacks lifting evenly on bost sides. Post usually plucks right out, particually timber as the timber when is swells from moisture cracks the concrete over time.  Two jacks combind will give you a lifting force of 3-4tons, more that any or most bobcats.

  Hi Tim.  Those two holes in the top of the driver have not got much to do with air escaping during driving although that may happen.  It is a requirement when hot dip galvanising to provide air and liquid escape holes.  They allow the acid etch bath to fully submerge the item.  They also allow the molten Zn solution to flow into and out the part.  I say 'solution' as there is other metal alloys in the zinc such as aluminium.  And most importantly to the galvaniser allow the zinc to run out.  We had an occassion where the drain holes were too small and the post was 1/4 full of solid zinc.  So much so it was difficult to lift the post.  We kept this post as reminder of our stupidity.  The galvanisers have guides which set out where to put holes and their size.  The reason why there are two holes is it does not matter which way the driver is hung on the hot dip immersion frame.

  This is one use for my backhoe. I've probably pulled about 200 old wooden posts with no problems. I just welded a clevis grab hook onto the front bucket to make things easier.
