I'm roughly as old as James and I remember these commercials. Except the Legend of Zelda commercial I remember was a guy in dark room freaking out over the various enemies. That and the rap for the first Gameboy Zelda game

No joke, that Wario commercial actually scared me when I first saw it as a little kid.

Man this reminds me of watching Pokemon episodes on cassette tape, and at the end of the tape there was always the same set of commercials. One i think was for a ranma movie, but the last one was always his bus driver with his bus full of pokemon. After inviting Pikachu onto the bus, he then drives into what seems to be a car compactor located in a random back alley, where he gets out and locks the doors, before turning the compactor on, crushing his own bus full of Pokemon, and ending up with a gameboy that seems to have those Pokémon trying to escape from the screen.

So in that Mario Bros. Atari commercial (which feels wrong to say but I digress), I'm pretty sure they had the actor as Luigi so they could reference a line from an old 1960s sitcom called Car 54, Where Are You? . It's opening theme song is as follows:

🎶There's a holdup in The Bronx, Brooklyn's broken out in fights!
There's a traffic jam in Harlem that's backed up to Jackson Heights!
There's a scout troop short a child, Khruschev's due at Idlewild!
Car 54, Where Are You?🎵

"Is Atari before Famicom?" Henya, the first gaming console came out in 1972, courtesy of the American corporation, Magnavox. A related fun fact: SEGA was started by an American businessman living in Japan.
