Good video. I remember working with a designer that had been making games since 1981. He's had a solid career, never really a big hit, but lives a good life, owns a house, and just grinding out game after game. Not every game needs to be a massive success.

It is so interesting to me how often developers on your podcast bring up designing with limitations. It seems that developing with limitation in mind greatly increases the odds of you releasing a game

His GDC talk is incredibly helpful for any indie. Thanks for another great video.

More indies should strive for PART-time gamedev. Variable income from your game + stable income from your job. This gives such a nice piece of mind. Definitely recommend, especially now with two kids to feed.

The first time I heard Jake talk about this was in his GDC talk from 8 years ago. He’s got a great mindset about the reality of what it takes to make a career out of going “indie,” and if you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it (along with all of his other interviews as well, of course).

Great video as always, I can’t wait for the full interview. You’ve been on a roll lately, man!

I was laughing at your wife calling your short term successes “pops”, because that’s a common term in wrestling for when a popular wrestler comes out and gets an exceptionally strong crowd reaction, cheers, roars, etc. So it’s a pretty applicable term for what you’re talking about as well I think!

These are the devs I find most interesting. Not the ones who chase stupid dreamgame projects like myself, but people who make stuff that actually sells!
