  Betsy Nagelsen was the wife of Mark McCormack, the owner of IMG which was one of the major management companies in Tennis. He represented a number of players including Monica Seles, and Betsy became good friends with Monica. As you can see, Betsy was a solid serve & volley player with a fluid serve.  Her best results were in doubles where she won two grand slams: the 1980 Australian Open with Martina Navratilova and 1987 Wimbledon with Liz Smylie. In singles, her best grand slam results were at Wimbledon where she twice made the third round. In 1990 she reached the third round aged almost 34 after a first round win over Arantxa Sanchez Vicario from match point down.

  After all, Chris Evert was far more agile in 1984 than in 1988. Had she remained at her 1984 level, I think she might even have been able to beat Steffi Graf at the peak of her career.

  What a fantastic and fun match! Love Betsy and she really took it to Chris here - changing her return position in the second set, chipping and charging, really putting the pressure on. Chris’s lobs are insane tho! I swear she could hit them in her sleep 🤣❤👌 Thanks so much for posting JTC 🥂

  Betsy also took Chrissie to three sets in the '85 Australian Open 2R (4-6, 6-4, 6-0).  She was one of those dangerous floaters on grass like Ros Fairbank who had wins over seeded players in the early rounds.

  Thank you JTC for another great chris evert match which i never knew existed.  Betsy could give chris a hard time on grass as she also did at the Aussie open the following year. Well done chris for moving your game up a gear in the 3rd set.

  This was a very good match - thanks for posting.  Betsy played very well especially in the second set where her serve and volley game and great touch at the net made it seem like an upset could be on the cards for Chris.   But Chris was moving very well here - she was noticeably quicker than even a year or two before and the extra work she'd put into her strength and fitness was very apparent.  And she reasserted her dominance in the third set.

  What a good 2nd round match! Nagleson could volley! The way she dove made me worry she was about to get hurt but very fun to watch!

  Betsy Nagelson and Ros Fairbank….the 2 perennial dangerous floating outsiders during the 80s! Betsy had a game style not dissimilar to Evonne Goolagong.
