Hi Jayskii!
That was a wonderful reaction to this classic song. It was actually a cover. The composers Burt Bacharach and Hal David, in 1963 worked with actor Richard Chamberlain (Dr. Kildare) to record the first iteration of Close To You. It wasn’t a hit. A few more tried for the next few years including the legendary Dionne Warwick. None succeeded. Then Burt gave the song to Herb Alpert. Herb had a go but knew the song wasn’t for him. So he gave it to his new hire, Richard Carpenter and told him to do what he wanted to and see what he could come up with. Well, Richard added the opening piano shuffle and completely rearranged the tempo and had Karen sing it. What resulted was the Carpenters first #1 hit that stayed at #1 for four weeks. Carpenters were on their way.
I also think fresh laundry scent is a new way to describe Karen’s voice but I like it! It’s unique and beautiful. Yes that machine at the beginning was a 1970 era reel to reel tape recorder. Either a 16 or 32 track recorder. Not exactly sure which. In this restored video we see Karen in drums but she is actually miming to the original single release which had Hal Blaine on drums. Karen drummed on many Carpenters songs just not this one but the video is a showcase.
More history of greatness coming!
Joe

When Karen sang she sang a song to you not at you. It made you feel like she was singing only to you and you alone….. like a whisper in your ear. RIP Karen

She was a master at drumming. She had the voice of an angel and her brother on piano was the perfect harmony. RIP Karen.

I grew up with the Carpenters' music. Karen was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. She had such a pure calming voice. And she was a terrific drummer. That was her passion even more than singing. Sadly we lost her so young. Thankfully we have her legacy left in her music. The Carpenters had so many great songs such as "We've Only Just Begun", "For All We Know", "Goodbye To Love", "Top Of The World", "Sing", "Yesterday Once More", "I Won't Last A Day Without You", "Please Mr. Postman", "Only Yesterday", "There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over the World)", "I Need To Be In Love" & so many more.

"Close to You" was THE song of Summer 1970. It was so happy and beautiful. And people would sing along with the "Wahs" at the end as they drove with their car windows open. It went to #1, and was the Carpenters' first big hit. Richard has explained over the years, "The Carpenters were not an overnight success. "Close to You" was an overnight success."

A number of singers sang this song prior to the Carpenters, but it took Karen Carpenter's beautiful voice and brother Richard's great arrangement and keyboard work to make this a #1 song in 1970.

Thank you for reacting to this legendary brother/sister duo. Karen’s gorgeous voice and impeccable drumming and Richard’s beautiful arrangements, classic pianist. Both musical geniuses.

"(They Long to Be) Close to You" is a song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. First recorded in 1963 by Richard Chamberlain, the song had its biggest success in 1970, in a version recorded by American duo the Carpenters for their second studio album Close to You and
produced by Jack Daugherty. A soft pop ballad, the song expresses a woman's appreciation that her romantic partner symbolically attracts the attention of birds and
falling stars.

♥️🎶🎼🎤🎧🎸🥁🎹🎺♥️
