  Why do I need a 900-ft-lb gun? Well, duh... the last mechanic to work on it was a 7-ft tall Orc, and he took tightening it as a challenge!!!

  One of the most terrifying experiences I’ve had wrenching was torquing wheel bolts to 900ft lbs on a combine harvester. It’s bonkers to visibly see an extension load up and twist with using a torque tree

  Extention and swivel torque loss was one of the first lessons I remember as an apprentice. No mention of this in trade school, it was only when I was removing my first RWD transmission I learned this.

  Here’s a hypothesis about why the difference between vintage and modern vintage: tolerances in the square drive at either end of the extension. My hunch is that bigger difference between input and output square size leads to less torque transmission. If each impact has to take up square drive slack in addition to axial flex in the extension, then slop means less transmission of impulse. <br><br>Fun episode to test this would be to gradually file off .001” at a time from x and y on the square drive and see what happens on the graph.
