PLEASE GUYS read this before you comment:
- I am not American and I am not a foreigner looking for a second holiday home coming to gentrify, I already live in Italy, my partner is Italian, we are just looking to settle down together in HIS country.
- I KNOW why these houses are (relatively) cheap: very remote locations with little job opportunities, in need of extensive renovation, high cost of upkeep. I mention this in the video multiple times.
- I am aware of property taxes on villas by now, thank you.
- No, I cannot actually afford any of these homes (yet, because I WILL be delusional and dream), it was just a fun video to dream and appreciate pretty buildings. I am not here to brag about how rich I am.
- Again, this video was just for FUNNN < 3

Sorry for snapping at you all but some of the comments were getting a little wild. With all this being said, enjoy these gorgeous italian properties for your viewing pleasure xxx

It's fun to dream. I used to dream about living in a Victorian mansion but ended up with a small cottage. And I have to say, it's been heaven. Very cozy, inexpensive to maintain and heat in the winter. It's been paid off for years, and not having to make a house payment every month has been a blessing. So don't dismiss your boyfriend's practicality! It's easier to carry on with your dreams when your roof isn't leaking and you're not shivering when the snow is flying outside.

It’s insane how affordable these huge houses are compared to houses in the Netherlands. Our appartement costs almost as much as a 12 room house. 😂

Just moved to france to an 18th century maison with a pool and two out buildings for half the price of our dutch townhouse. We sold the townhouse, have no mortgage, and live in a freaking mansion! These communities are dying to have people come renovate this old beautiful structures. Take the plunge! Its worth it!

Those that aren’t expensive are often due to 1. Where they are located, not a lot of work in the zone, 2. Costs of restoring the home/maintaining them.

My partner bought a huge old apartment in Italy and I bought an 8 room house with garden (small rooms, it's no mansion). They were dirt cheap (not even $100k for the two of them). The apartment only needs a new kitchen. The house needs new kitchen and bathrooms. But we aimed for simple properties, where the complexity/cost of renovations would be as low as possible.

I know a woman who bought a home in Italy and paid a lot of money to renovate it. She's now in expensive litigation because the work was defective. And everything in Italy moves slowly. So I would not want to get involved in a complicated/expensive renovation.

I found an incredible old convent -- huge internal courtyard (with trees in it), a 4 bedroom apartment which had already been renovated, but the cost/complexity involved in renovating the rest of (including a bell tower) put me off buying it. The Italian State would have to approve all the works and would force me to use approved historical contractors. The entire thing was about $140k.

Personally I wouldn't want to live anywhere but the centre of an old historical town.

They are "cheap" because they are really expensive to mantein and utilities are higher because they are really big. I am looking for a smaller house since a few years, and the smaller ones with decent garden and well connected to the city have a much higher sm price. Renovation costs are really high right now, around 1000/1500 Euro pro sm 😅 and they also could loose value in time. But you are right, it is crazy if you think they cost the same as 60 sm flat in a major european city.

The Italian government may give you a stipend to renovate the Lake Como house and you can get any additional renovation costs subtracted from your income taxes - it’s definitely worth looking into! I would totally donate to or subscribe to a patreon to see you renovate that house 😍

I once rented an isolated home in Sardinia in the hills. I will gove up my morning coffee in a coffeshop nearby for a quiet evening and a sky filled with stars every day. This video is really inspirational.
