  In my days as a gaffer (film lighting tech) I’ve hauled many of those 5k beasts up the grid, as well as the big brother 10k. In North America, they were 110V. In the early days, no ground. The bulb in this restoration is a compact halogen bulb. They ran hot so that any material that would boil off the filament would redeposit on the filament, keeping the glass envelope cleaner, longer. It was good practice to wear gloves and clean the envelope after re-lamping. Finger oils would weaken the glass, causing a spectacular shattering failure. The older incandescent bulbs were the size fish bowls. As they aged, soot would collect inside the bulb, reducing efficiency. Each large incandescent bulb had a small amount of abrasive grit inside. When the bulb was cold, we would invert the bulb and the grit would fall out, then we’d swirl the grit around like a big brandy snifter. This would clean the soot of the inside of the bulb. The upside of the massive power consumption of this luminaire is the amount of heat given off - adequate to heat a house. You kids and your battery operated LED lights - if you’re not blowing fuses, burning wires and scorching set walls you’re not really lighting!

  This reminds me of a guy I studied computer science with 25+ years ago. They were upgrading the street lights on a stretch of highway near Copenhagen and decided to try and sell off the old ones. He bought one of them, just because he thought it was a cool thing to have (he was right). It was <i>huge</i> in that unexpected way of things you usually only see from a distance. He turned it on at some point when we were studying in his basement, just to show how powerful it was. It took about 30 seconds to get up to full output, and it was so bright as to be extremely unpleasant, and gave off so much heat that we very quickly asked him to turn it off again.

  i know im late to the party .... but i love restorations like this. the sand blasting and wire wheel, talk about &quot;satisfying&quot;. normally you know its doing the job, but to watch it ...... sooo good.

  As an old theater techie, I&apos;ve been looking forward to this one. I always loved working withe the fresnel instruments. Their simple design made them versatile and rock solid performers, and they could take a lot of abuse. Of course we only used 6&quot; models with 575W lamps on our stage, not magnificent behemoths like this. I do recognize those battle scars and hacky repairs. If it&apos;s gotta work for the show, you do whatever it takes to make it happen. While I appreciate your choice to leave it au naturale, I might have chosen a black or dark gray hammered paint finish for the personal nostalgia. This was a fun one! Thanks for sharing!

  That light has had some serious history. Originally made in England (where it would have been painted either grey or black), and had an “(England) Ltd” back plate. Moved across the Atlantic where it probably picked up its Mole Richardson US style maroon paint, and somewhere along the line was also painted blue and lost its back plate. <br>Another great job!
