  My goal with this channel is always to chase historical facts, not a comfortable narrative.   Those translation choices illustrate semantic range. &nbsp;For example, presbyter means elder, but Timothy is also called a presbytery and told not to let people give him too much trouble because of his youth. Clearly he&apos;s not an old man in the letter to Timothy, but he&apos;s still holding the office of presbyter. So when the word presbyter is used in the New testament, you have to decide if he means an old guy or someone that&apos;s taking on the nascent office of presbyter which we call in English priest. Likewise, with the word translated as parents, it can mean both things. And the church was clearly not just an assembly, but that&apos;s again something that you have to make translation choices. This is why I always give people the advice that they should iwn the DR for our heritage and its beauty, the Ignatius Bible, preferably the Ignatius study Bible, for a more up-to-date translation and some useful notes, and the translation that&apos;s approved for liturgy in your local Bishop&apos;s conference. &nbsp; It&apos;s interesting, although the DR is translated from Latin, the original translators also have access to tyndale&apos;s version and it certainly had influence and the New testament was finished before the King. James, which most likely influenced the King James and the revision of the DR was certainly influenced by the King James version. <br><br>My favorite quirk of the DR is in Chronicles it talks about the suburbs of the cities and in Genesis it talks about the dukes of Edom. Those are some fun latinisms. I respectively think of people washing their wagons and mowing their lawns when it talks about the suburbs, which just means pasture lands in Latin, and the dukes of Edom which just means chieftains, I imagine the dukes of Hazzard but with chariots and the edamites running away from a kind of bronze age boss hog

  Really good episode. &nbsp;The history of the Reformation is messy and complicated. &nbsp;King Henry VIII was awarded by the Pope as &quot;Defender of the Faith&quot; because he declared Luther a dangerous heretic only a few years before he was forced to break away from the Church because he was trying to avoid a war of succession in England. &nbsp;He wanted a male heir so none of his daughters would need to become Queen, there was no good precedence for this. &nbsp;Joke was on him, after his schism he died and his son only ruled briefly before he himself died at 15 and then both of his daughters ruled as Queen in turn. &nbsp;He got the wars he feared and he got the chaos in the churches.<br><br>Schism always has a human origin masked in piety. &nbsp;In this case, it was a mixture of lust combined with a real urge to avoid instigating a war of succession.

  The Catholic Church was the one to brand him a heretic, but it was actually the English Crown (Henry VIII&apos;s government) that carried out the execution and had his Bibles burned in the streets.

  Also, it was not the church that burned him at the stake it was the crown. &nbsp;There is a difference in that story or lie Protestants like to perpetuate.
