  Another angle of this is that progressive policies that attack discipline and behavioral consequences like suspension by calling them systematically racist in favor of promoting "restorative justice" have contributed to the deterioration of schools. These are policies NHJ advocates for. In her piece she heard her daughter say that her teachers couldn't teach because they could only spend time managing the poorly behaved kids, and she still said the bad kids shouldn't be removed because THEY will lose class time. Thats an example of ideologically blinded suicidal empathy at its finest. I'd like to hear your thoughts on that.

  Hmmm...For a person of her stature and cultural savvy, I actually find it hard to believe that she would NOT expect some level of the response. She's astute enough to gauge the likely response for multiple sides.

  I think it is surprising the disconnect you see between NYT article and HNJ interview with PBS.  It is almost the opposite of what she wrote.  Besides confusing it seems more of a publicity stunt than a genuine mistake that was made by a parent.  For me her article did reinforce the failure of the public education system especially for black students   Even though NYC last 5 school chancellors 3 were black two Hispanic.  I think for a long time the advocacy from High School to college was this is discrimination if you don't let this black student with 4.0 GPA into ABC college.  Obviously, SAT, AP and other exams were discriminatory and people all around the admission process are racist.  However, maybe she didn't realize that it was shining a harsh light at failures of DEI and raised many questions about credentials of black college graduates.  Additionally, I think there is a societal question: what is the value of an adult who can't read or do basic math?  I think NHJ inadvertently made a bigger mistake by writing this article than putting her daughter through 10 years of terrible education.  Realizing this she is trying to make a hard pivot in an opposite direction.
