I’ve been retired for over thirteen years. The greatest purpose I’ve found is in helping others who are in need. Not just a charity to give to, though that is good too. But being able to make a direct impact on the lives of others.
We started by providing childcare scholarships for single parents who need to work but don’t have family support to watch their young children. Childcare costs are high, so we provide help to single parents vetted by the school.
A local women’s shelter needed financial assistance in programs helping get women with kids back on their feet by assisting with childcare expenses, paying for used cars so they can get to work, and providing security deposits and first month’s rent to help them get their own place.
A local Catholic school was setting up a program to help children with ADHD, autism, and other executive function related issues to get the help they need during school hours to be able to focus on their studies better.
There are so many needs out there, and it’s very satisfying to be able to help.

Before I retired I never realized how much less money we would need after retirement. We moved to a lower cost area because we weren't concerned with jobs, bought a smaller house in cash, had no debt. I didn't have a million dollars but after 10 years of retirement I do. All those years planning for a big retirement income and now I don't even use it. Glad we retired early despite doubts.

I have 3 young boys. I know my wife and I will have more than enough for retirement. My goal is to help out my sons when they’re older and their families if they have them.

I retired at 55, I am 70 now. All of my income is COLA’d work pension and Social Security. Essentially none of my retirement income comes from my savings. I may not be in the stock market but I have daily peace of mind and more than enough income for my daily expenses, an emergency fund, health insurance, and I can still save money.

I have no debt. I'm married and neither of us have children. As for experiences - I moved to Thailand nearly 10 years go. I'm feeling pretty satisfied with retired life 15 years later.

Good points. Most important is guaranteed monthly income that covers essential spending. Next is low or no debt (4 years left on mortgage). A sense of purpose is a plus along with relationships. The actual size of the portfolio is least important when you have the guaranteed income.

By far the greatest and longest enduring financially related happiness/well being jolt I’ve experienced landed the first of the month we started living completely debt free. The satisfaction reverberates to this day. A couple of decades later—comfortably retiring a few years early was mild in comparison for whatever reason.
