FUN FACT: The producers were interested in Anthony Hopkins to play Hannibal in Manhunter; but he was busy on the stage in England, so they cast Brian Cox. Then, when The Silence of the Lambs was being made, they offered Cox the chance to reprise the role; however, he was busy on the stage in England, so they cast Hopkins. And here's the wild part: It was the same play, at the same theatre, both times.

“My heart bleeds for him as a child. Someone took a kid and manufactured a monster. At the same time, as an adult, he’s irredeemable.” is such a raw fucking line

The podcast Blank Check described the three (good) performances of Hannibal this way:
Brian Cox is playing Hannibal as a human being.
Anthony Hopkins is playing Hannibal as a vampire.
Mads Mikkelsen is playing Hannibal as the Devil.
I think that’s the best description of the different performance styles in these movies

5:26 This is such a raw line. That is a dad right there. Most movies say “victim struggled after taking a lethal blow” but this one says “he fought” and it was because he knew the killer was heading to the kid’s room. That was a man who gave everything he had for his kids right up till he dropped dead. Tells you so much about the victims.

I am so weak for the fact that Will Graham is so emotionally intelligent and well-spoken. He is the parent every child deserves and the spouse every adult deserves. Emotional intelligence is such an underrated trait, and hope we as a civilization can normalize it a lot more, especially for men. Let men have emotions beyond anger and bitterness!

Can't we just appreciate that Hannibal Lecter had some really great actors portraying him on the screen. Not a miscast so far

Absolutely fair that Dead Meat can't cover the 2013 Hannibal TV series, but anyone in the comments who hasn't seen it needs to check it out. One of the best TV shows ever made, a wonderful take on the title character, and shockingly violent for a series that premiered on USA network TV.

What really amazes me about Brian Cox's portrayal of Lecter, is that while he does act like a completely normal person, you can just tell that something's off.
It feels like an act, like he's trying too hard to act normal.
That's hard to pull off and I can't even tell how exacly he's doing it.

16:24

I like that scene especially. He's empathetic to what Francis went through as a child but acknowledges that those events in no way excuse what he is doing now and he must be stopped.

I'm so glad James is finally covering the Hannibal Lecter movies. Manhunter is so underrated, William Petersen and Tom Noonan give such incredible performances and I love Brian Cox's Hannibal. Every actor who's potrayed him does a great job, but Cox gives him a reserved subtlety that makes him feel all the more like a reall psychopath.

How Mann shoots the Graham/Lecktor scene is amazing. Walls are identical, both shown through bars. Lecktor may have been caught but Graham is still in his own prison. Michael F'n Mann, man.
