My mother planted an orange tree years ago, but she got sour fruit. She hacked it down at least twice, but it kept growing back, LOL. I live in the house now and I use them as lemons rather than waste them. I assumed that this tree must have resulted from a grafted tree that lost the part grafted on, and grew up from the root part only. But only last spring I found out it is a Seville Orange. Maybe I will try to make one of these boxes. I don't waste the oranges. They have their uses.

I’m picturing make one or two of these then storing some black tea in them for some time to scent the tea.

Will I look at oranges and see only boxes? Tiny little fragrant boxes?

The Grounds Keeper at my Kindergarten made these. He scrapped the pulp out using a curved spoon knife and ....I know he used salt in the hot water, but he put two other things in the hot water before soaking the orange rinds to help loosen the skin and preserve the finished rind. I think one was Borax, not much just a pinch, all three powders were pinches. Then after they dried, Mr. Franklin would shellac the outside, if the drying rind cracked a bit, he would put leaves and Honey Suckle flower petals to layer over the cracks reinforcing them and strengthen the box. He used every Citrus Fruit he could get his hands on becaause he sold'em at the Farmer's Market. He fed us the gave us the flesh to eat so it didn't go to waste, and, that time after we ate lunch, and after our naps? He would sit on one of the benches under a tree in one of the playgrounds with his Bib Overalls and his basket of tools and projects, occaisonally stopping, handing one of his wicked sharp knives to one of us little kids to hold, and reach in them Bibs big pocket and pull out his pouch of tabbacco and rollin' papers, and quickly roll up a cigarette, lighting it by flicking a horny thumb with hard callused skin on the tip of a kitchen match, he would take a drag, pull out his watch from that pocket, and sometimes? would pull out dimes to give us, with one big kid getting two dimes, to go to the Soda Machine in the large Carport (8 carks could fit under it, and we played their sometimes during Monsoon Season) for the place and he would say in his deep barritone voice "Onea y'all, bring me back an RC Coler please" and we would run off grabbing near freezing sodas (35f/1.6c) in the killer heat (some times 105f/ 40c). A freezing cold Grape Nehi in a bottle on hot days like that were a God Send..... sometimes I got the 'Nehi Penacilin Flavor' the infamous 'end of batch run' where they dumped left over syrups into a vat to make a mixed batch of soda. It was always a surprise. Mr. Franklin also made wooden spoons of all kinds, apple heads for corn husk dolls, and numerous styles of baskets including the hardest of all, the Pine Needle Basketry of the Local Indigenous Folk of the US Gulf Coast.

I'm not sure why YouTube thought I'd be interested in making citrus boxes but yes, I am. I can think of uses for these since I'm trying to reduce plastic in my life. Plus they are so adorable. I subscribed to see part 2, and etc.

The massaging and stretching over the mold reminds me a lot of the process for wet-forming leather (I'm sure better-smelling this case)

I grow Bergamots! Thank you for giving me one more way to make use of every part of the two fruits per year I get from that tree.

Great video, things like this remind me of how much we waste because we mindlessly make everything out of plastic.

We used to make something similar but sprinkled cinnamon or ground cloves on it before it dried.  Smelled like Christmas!

Bitter oranges make great cooking ingredients. Unlike sweet oranges which are sugary sweet, they're more like lemons, and add tang and sharpness to dishes. They are the oranges to use with duck for the classic duck a l'orange, the sharp citrus adding brightness to the rich fatty duck.
