the shift in how we feel about Lee J. Cobb's character in the last couple of minutes is just brilliant (as is the whole movie); I also love Fonda helping him with his jacket.

I've never seen a film with such a large ensemble cast where there are no bad performances. None. Everyone was wonderful. Henry Fonda was great in this, of course. But Lee J. Cobb's performance was genius level. (He was Juror #3 -- the one with the son.) Cobb is so interesting to watch. The thing is, his rage is so overwhelming, it's easy to dismiss him as a one-dimensional loudmouth bully. So it's easy to miss how nuanced his performance is. Anger yes, but also vulnerability, uncertainty, sadness, regret, intelligence, tenderness, fear, empathy, humor, thoughtfulness -- it's all there. It's just perfectly, carefully placed and very, very subtle. A one-man acting masterclass.

Remarkable film on many levels. The best actors of the era. A riveting screenplay. Superb direction by first- time Sidney Lumet. Subtle camerawork manipulates perception of viewers. Outstanding accomplishment. A classic among classics.

They showed this film in the school's auditorium when I was in 9th grade. It was one of the very first REAL Adult type film I ever saw. The kids were sort of bored at first but after the knife bit popped up, you could hear a pin drop. Impressive.

Henry Fonda’s magnanimous gesture towards Lee J Cobb at the end was a great touch. He retrieved his jacket and helped him put it on.

The defendant was Puerto Rican.  There was a lot of animosity in NYC at the time toward them.  West Side Story went into it in more detail around the same time as this movie.

Isn't it fascinating how you can cry for a man who you've spent almost an entire film frustrated and disgusted by, because we experience the heartbreak he has been feeling that drove his behavior.

This film is an absolute masterpiece of writing and directing. To have the audience rivited simply by 12 characters in a room talking for the entire film and to see them swayed one by one as reasoned argument beats out bias and preconception. I love how the guilty votes are all the result of different 'baggage', it would be so easy just to use racism for all of them but everyone had a unique reason they are forced to confront.

I was a juror on a child rape case. It was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life having to listen to that testimony.
