The man who told Hannibal that he "knew how to win a battle, but did not know how to win a war," was his cavalry commander, Maharpal. And according to the historical texts, what he actually said to Hannibal was, "Hannibal, you know how to GAIN a victory. You do not know how to USE it."

Hannibal was really a genius, who else would have thought to use Uma Musumes in battle?

The Punic Wars can be summed up as this:
-First Punic War: Rome's the Underdog, and win because they have a better Army and more robust government; and also because the Carthaginian Senate fumbled the ball numerous times.

-Second Punic War: Rome thinks Carthage is too weak and it'll be an easy win, and then Carthage nearly kills them off (Hannibal would come the closest to killing Rome. No one else would ever come close for nearly 1000 years); but then Carthage again fumbles the ball numerous times.

-Third Punic War: Rome takes what they thought would be a victory lap; and then Carthage punches them in the face and breaks their nose. At that point, Rome stops fucking around and genocides Carthage. This time, Carthage really had no chance from the get go; and in fact fought much harder and better than anyone really expected of them.

If I remember correctly the reason they couldn’t pay the mercenaries and hired new ones instead was because there is a sign up fee for hiring them and then their is a years of service fee. They could afford to pay new mercenaries but not enough to pay the previous mercenaries for the years of service they provided to Carthage

The reason Rome was so adverse to surrendering was because in its early years, a Celtic tribe laid siege to the city and the king surrendered hoping to spare the city, and the Celts burned down Rome anyway. Thus the Romans got the connotations that surrender means death.
New Carthage (Nova Carthago) still exists as Cartagena, Spain.
Hannibal's Italian campaign left lasting effects on Italy to this day. Hannibal is the bogeyman Nonnas tell their grandchildren to watch out for. Lake Trasemine is still sometimes referred to as the "Lake of Blood." The southern Italian phrase for messing up royally directly translates as "to have Cannae-ed/to do a Cannae."

Oh yeah, it's one of my favorite tidbits I see commented on the Second Punic wars reactions. Imagine 30 million Americans and 1/3rd of our legislative branch were k*lled in an area the size of central park. The death toll of Cannae was absolutely mind boggling for the time with the exception of China with the War of Three Kingdoms. Any other nation would have surrendered after Lake Tresimene, let alone Cannae. That level of grit and determination is a big reason Rome built such a massive empire

Obviously he can't cover everything in detail, the channel is called Oversimplified after all, but the deal with Masinissa marrying Syphax's wife and then poisoning her was a little more shades of gray than presented here. It's portrayed like Rome told Masinissa to poison his wife and he just went "okay" and did it. But in reality, this woman Sophonisba, being the daughter of Hasdrubal Gisco, was very influential in Carthaginian politics and had been using her influence against Rome for a while. So, possibly fearing she'd influence Masinissa exactly the same way, the Romans demanded she be turned over to them as a prisoner. At which point she poisoned herself in order to avoid the shame of being captured. She was also betrothed to Masinissa BEFORE she married Syphax, the marriage to Syphax only happened when it became necessary to use her as leverage to secure his alliance with Carthage, which Masinissa was perhaps slightly miffed by.
