Never realized the box of doom is a dead ringer for Castle Grayskull

One of my players once said "As long as Dan is talking and occasionally looking at his clipboard, I'm fine. As soon as he picks up his dice, I get scared." I LOVE ALL Bob World Builder videos!

Just a quick painting hack for you if you'd like to try it, Bob: Shadows aren't black. So if you haven't tried before, try doing your first spray coat in a dark grey instead of black. Your colors will show up easier on the whole mini while still giving shadowed areas, especially if you use contrast paints over your zenethil. Alternatively you can also do the first coat on your darkest color shade you'll be painting the mini with, and the coat from above in the lightest shade, if you have an air brush. (Cans could get expensive that way unless you're doing a whole Warhammer army with the same color scheme, and thereby only need two colors of cans)
Anyway, great vid as always, man!

Brennan's screen from Cloudward, Ho! was a true marvel- secret compartments that were accessed through mechanical manipulations that hid clues both in game and from the players. Hats off to the art department at Dimension 20 for their enhancements to the games

I think things like the Box of Doom, like lots of little touches make the game more tangible and extra exiting. Sure, you can functionally just always roll in the open, but saving a special box for BIG rolls really invest everyone and draw attention.

Not a Box of Doom but one time one of my Wizard players had a magical duel against a vampire sorceress (Ludmilla from Strahd Reloaded.) I switched our music to Ecstasy of Gold from The Good, The Bad and Ugly and we had this massive showdown, roll vs roll and it was SO memorable and cool. The dice can tell thier own story, yes, and I can just read off notes the players find but it's so much more fun to (occasionally) actually have a physical handout to put in the player's hands to have them read aloud (or keep secret.)

I love the Box of soom not because the theatrics, but because the suspense, and the reason that works is the brealing down of that dm player barrier by Brennan telling the players the DC! They already know what they have to beat, and so as soon as that dice stops moving they can all react quickly to whether or not they triumph in that suspensful moment

I start planning whenever I get inspired, regardless of the time of year. Usually for Halloween, that happens after any Talk Like a Pirate Day and Oktoberfest adventures.

The Box of Doom amps up the energy when it is presented in all it's showmanship glory. Great miniatures and excellent session spark.
