I'm a Materials engineer and it's so cool to see a jeweler intergrate Materials Science into their art to make beautiful timeless are love your content and your mission.

I remember seeing a snippet in a college geology textbook about “diamonds are a cartel’s best friend” because they manufactured an ad campaign around the 1950s to create demand for a gem nobody was buying, and then artificially created scarcity to drive the price up. Due to that knowledge, my husband did not buy a diamond for my engagement ring, and I was much happier with the aesthetic while his frugal soul was much happier with the price tag 😂

Funnily enough my dad worked for De Beers and didn't give my mom a diamond engagement ring. It didn't have a gemstone at all, which is good in hindsight because she lost it down the sink a few years later.

As a geologist friend of mine who specializes in mineralogy once told me, "If you send me a lab created emerald, I will crush it into powder, conduct an Xray spectrometry test on it, and send you a report that states that you once had a real emerald." Loved your video as it confirms my beliefs and observations too.,

I'm old enough to remember when DeBeers had a near monopoly on diamonds (about 85%) and advertised about how much should be spent on an diamond engagement ring and kept prices artificially high.
I've given her opals, sapphires and the last stone I purchased for her was granite.

A friend of mine studied Egyptology and now works in that field. What I found interesting is that she once said that Egyptian silver artifacts are much more interesting to archaeologists than gold artifacts from the same period, as silver was much rarer and more valuable than gold in that society.

Literally the whole "you need to spend X to show your love" is why I'm learning to make rings. One day, when I have need of an engagment ring, it might not look like a $15,000 ring, but it will be one I practiced for years to make myself

3:23 my ex husband insisted on spending 3x his salary on my ring. he was already not happy i wanted an opal, and he wanted me to pick an even more expensive opal to better fit this budget. thing is, he wasn’t a wealthy man, and i didn’t think it was that important (i did pick an opal he deemed satisfactory, mainly because the jeweler said black opal is the minimum for engagement rings).

now i see where this belief came from. he’s british and i’m asian, so i did not grow up with this exposure to de beers marketing. sure, the shops all promote diamonds for engagement rings but without the cultural conditioning it just made me see them as basic.

"It's the blood of small child hands on the stones that dugg them out of the ground, that make natural stones special" - probably De Beers
