The Beginning of the End of Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics just handed the keys to MCU executives who don't read comics, don't care about comics, and have every reason to bury them. Dan Buckley is out. And what's replacing him should terrify every comic fan. For years, fans have complained about the direction of Marvel Comics. Endless relaunches. Event fatigue. Weak characterization. Premium prices for stories that feel more focused on synergy with the MCU than respecting decades of comic book continuity. Now, after major Disney layoffs and the removal of longtime Marvel executives, things may be getting even worse. In this video, Wes breaks down the shocking leadership shakeup at Marvel Comics as Dan Buckley is pushed aside and Marvel Studios television executive Brad Winderbaum takes creative control over publishing, while Disney music executive David Abdo steps in as general manager. These are not comic book publishing veterans. They are Disney corporate executives whose entire careers revolve around branding, synergy, streaming, and “results-focused” management. That might sound harmless on paper. But comic fans have already seen what happens when corporations hand beloved franchises over to executives who don’t understand the medium, the audience, or the culture surrounding it. Whether it’s WWE becoming overloaded with sponsorships after the TKO merger, endless MCU synergy infecting Marvel storytelling, or DC Comics experimenting with outside-the-box executives who treated comics like disposable branding exercises, the results speak for themselves.
