Ohh my God .... eating with strangers, having to make conversation
with people you don't know, trapped under the burden of small talk..... It sounds like a nightmare. A nice table for one, a book or a magazine or my journal or just people watching ....
Good food, not having to worry about what your tablemates are thinking or
pretend to be interested in what they're saying.... a table for one sounds like heaven to me.

I always prefer to eat alone, whether it is a cruise or a restaurant. I have never felt awkward.

For me, room service for breakfast on a port day is the way to go. The knock on your door acts as your alarm/wake-up call. You can get ready while drinking your coffee. You miss the stampede at the buffet with everyone who's trying to eat breakfast before leaving for an excursion. Eating dinner alone or with a group depends on my mood. I'm equally comfortable with either one.

If you are unsure about dining alone on a cruise ship, practice at home. Go to a buffet restaurant, a casual restaurant, or even an expensive restaurant. If you like a particular restaurant and go there often, the servers will come to recognize you.
I have gone by myself to Fago de Choa Brazilian Steakhouse. I have always been treated well and have had a chance to talk to the host and table servers.
I take photos of the decor and the salad bar, which is a feast for the eyes as well as the tummy.
Sometimes I watch the meats come out or other customers. Other times I read a book.
When I go to a more casual restaurant, I frequently sort through my mail.

I travel alone either on a land guided tour or a cruise. However I don't feel alone coz there are so many other guests in that trip. Generally my goal is to explore the beautiful sights, immerse the culture and enjoy the food.

I can't think of anything worse than sharing a table. I don't like talking to strangers
. I hate it when someone is watching me eating.

I am a senior solo cruiser. I have been on many cruises and I can tell you that people are not noticing you the way you might imagine in your head. I’m an EXTREME introvert, so if people were staring at me or asking why I’m alone, I would not be going on another cruise next month. I’ve only been asked two times if I was dining alone (the MDR where I eat almost all of my meals). Those happened over 15 years ago when solo cruisers were rare.

As a solo cruiser, I find just the opposite. I prefer to sit alone, but always wind up in a small table in between large groups of people on both sides. I guess you need to ask for a privately positioned table. It's not that people are watching you, but they feel obligated to make conversation with you if you are seated alone next to them.

Rarely is a late buffet a good idea. It's early breakfast or nothing for me.

Late afternoon today I was going to get a sub from Publix. Apparently it was a good idea as there were ten other people who had the same idea as did I but walked faster than me with my cane. So I left and sat myself down in the middle of my favorite Thai restaurant. By myself. I prefer to take a bar seat if available when I am eating alone. If you have a bar in the main dining room I am there or even in a waiting area if there is a server who can bring me food. I have no problem if you can scrounge up a folding tray table or one of those classroom chairs with a little desk on one armrest. That said if I am cruising solo and especially if I paid the Dreaded ridiculous "solo supplement" if the only table you have is that big fourteen place round one under the Volkswagen sized chandelier on a raised platform in the exact middle of the dining room I will take it before I decide I do not want people to look at me eating alone so I will go grab a slice instead of my three appetizers.

Just ask for open seating. Dine with other cruisers.

I dont mind sittting alone i do not care what others think about me sitting alone. If someone invites me to sit with them i dont mind sure I'll sit with ya im not great with conversations though but sure ill chat with ya. 😅 You just have to deal with my A.D.D. and my forgetiing what i was going to say and what the conversation was about. I might circle around again.
