  Some stood where they fell - I grew up in Oldenburg in the sixties - we played on old tanks .

  In 1948 Egyptian Mark IV Panzers fought Israeli Shermans while overhead Egyptian spitfires fought Israeli ME109s ... all very confusing really.

  Most German tanks didn’t become museum icons — they became raw material for rebuilding a shattered Europe. There’s something poetic about weapons of destruction being turned into bridges, factories, and cities.

  My wife’s grandfather cut up panzers after the war in Mossend in Lanarkshire for the local steelworks so they weren’t all cut up in Germany. He found a death’s head ring in one of them.

  In his autobiography Keith Richards says the panzers saved his life. In the late 60’s his 1947 Mercedes coupe had a steering collapse and it rolled over 3 times with him, Anita and Marlon in it, and according to Keith the car was made using metal lying around the factory and the strong steel stopped the roof collapsing.

  Research? In 2015, German authorities found a restored German panther in a dudes basement. He had other military equipment from WW2 as well, but needless to say they took the tank.

  Not just German Tanks, tens of thousands of destroyed Sherman Tanks cluttered up the European countryside !! The French grabbed as many Panthers as they could and ran them until the mid 1960&apos;s for their military, that&apos;s how some survived.
