The .mon theory is all but officially confirmed. Each Digimon officially has a “weight” in “G” which is confirmed by the newer Digimon pendulum to mean gigabyte, meaning Digimon have literal file sizes that directly correlate with their physical appearance (eg champion Kuwagamon is 20G whereas ultimate Mamemon is 5G). Generally the theme of every series is “we’re data but we’re alive” so outright saying they’re just files would probably defeat that point.

Pretty sure monzaemon has always been Canon. First of all you can get him in PS1 Digimon World by literally putting a Numemon inside the costume. Pretty sure there is an anime episode to where a bunch of numerous come out of a monzaemon
