Planting seeds is one of the greatest acts of faith. I have farmed for years, and every year, I find myself hoping they all come up, wondering if they will.

My favorite thing to do is to run out on a rainy day and scatter seeds. The rain ends up burying them the right amount, and the soil is nice and moist. If it works for nature to do it like that, then it works for me. The birds get some but The right seeds germinate in the right spot. The ones that don't germinate sometimes do the next year.

If anyone thought for a second how plants disperse seeds, it makes sense that they generally wouldn't be planted deep in the earth. Especially when you take the germination stages into consideration. The plant basically plants itself.<br><br>Nature is our greatest teacher.

December, I put down a strip of tp, wet it, sprinkle with carrots seeds, another strip of tp, spritz it, and leaves it. Snow keeps it wet so when the weather warms up, they sprout.

I mix my tiniest seed with a little flour. Be sure to stir thoroughly. Then broadcast my mixture over my planting bed or row. This helps me in 3 ways. 1, it helps keeping me from over sowing. I’m really prone to plant too thick. 2, I can see exactly where I put my seeds. 3 the little bit of flour that is there soaks up water easily so it helps moisten my seeds quickly to help germinate. The flour dissolves into soil in a day or two and adds a tiny bit of organic material to soil so it is not harmful to plant or soil. Note don’t use flour that has salt in it.

I literally just throw handfuls of seeds around like confetti. If they're not aggressive enough for that I don't want 'em.

I'm pretty dumb. I just break up the ground with a garden hoe and throw the seeds all over. For some reason it works and I end up having to share with neighbors and pantries.

Lettuce: dark seeds should be covered for best germination. White seed shouldn't be covered for best germination.

The best lettuce I've ever grown was in a raised bed one winter, the last late snow fall I tossed my lettuce seed on top of the snow. I swear it was the best lettuce I've ever grown. As the snow melted the seeds were worked into the soil and were watered beautifully.
