  For me it was in the beginning of Return of the Jedi; after Darth Vader warns the Admiral in charge of the Death Star construction that the Emperor is coming and all this tension and terror is built up. Then he finally arrives and Vader kneels, and then you see him -- this tiny disheveled creature with a walking stick and that hideous laugh to end the scene. Now that was cinema!

  The shot that most defines the character for me is the shot where he's laughing while Darth Vader and Luke are clashing lightsabers right in front of him. He's laughing because it's exactly what he wanted. He wants Luke to kill his father so that luke can become his new slave. It perfectly conveys what a master manipulator he is as a character.

  One of my favourite lines was always "I hope so Commander for your sake.  The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am".  I mean for a character that indiscriminately kills his underlings to be considered the merciful one really helps set your expectations of the Emperor.

  The part where Palpatine says, “you will die” and then seeing his smug grin morph into a shape of pure rage and malice actually kind of scared me when I first saw it. He didn’t necessarily terrify me when I was younger (early 2000’s kid right here) but that switch from smug to immediate rage and then hearing Luke’s screams kind of got to me ngl. Palpatine isn’t scary, but he is menacing, and Ian’s performance definitely brought him to life.

  Palpatine being revealed to Anakin is his purest form of evil. <br><br>Palpatine turns his back on Anakin. In this moment, Palpatine has won. If Anakin kills him, whom he sees as an old man who can&apos;t fight back (like Dooku), he will strike him down in anger and hate, turning Anakin to the dark side. The Sith Lord then closes his eyes and revels in the fear, anger and hatred that threatens to destroy him. Those feelings are too sweet for him not to feel euphoric. But he doesn&apos;t strike, so Palpatine turns around and pulls on all the manipulation he has built over the years to ensure Anakin does exactly what he wants him to do

  I really like the shot in Phantom Menace where Palpatine is whispering to the queen&apos;s ear, prompting her to propose the vote of no confidence

  So many great Palpatine/Sidious moments. But one of my favorites is his smile at the end of Revenge of the Sith, as Anakin, now in the suit, begins breaking everything from the emotional rupture of losing Padme. That is a man who loves to see others in suffering. Plain and simple.

  After killing Snoke I was almost sure the twist in the story was going to be the swapping of light and dark between Rey and Ren. The flawed character wrestling with identity and the overconfident newcomer had all the setup. I was even looking forward to how they could pull off a &quot;Zuko here&quot; moment.
