  Correction. The Marneus Calgar comic said that people rarely live beyond 40 years of &quot;productive&quot; life. Which means that life in Ultramar is so good, that even if way sooner than in modern times, people still get to live enough as to retire. In the Warhammer 40K galaxy.

  Calth is an example of how well run Ultramare was. Its star was poisoned and surface destroyed, Ultramarians turned random tunnel systems into one of most prosperous planets in the imperium. Suck it Lorgar.

  The Ultramarines’ preeminence is pretty simple: logistics win wars, and keep territory. Guilliman had a head for logistics that rivaled Malcador, and imparted that proclivity unto both his sons and the very culture of the 500 Worlds. In a grim, dark future full of endless war, he who holds a legacy of equally unending logistics shall reign supreme.

  The thing to remember about Ultramar is that the basic Astro-political unit of the Imperium is the sector. Each sector is a discrete volume of space encompassing 80-200 worlds on average. &nbsp;With its own battle fleet and local administrative structures, each sector acts as a kind of Imperium in miniature. &nbsp;Ultramar, with 500 worlds in close proximity to each other is simply the densest concentration of human power outside the core sectors of the Segmentum Solar. &nbsp;<br><br>The ability of 500 worlds to readily work together would produce economic effects which would scale well beyond the capabilities of almost any other sector. &nbsp; Ultramar is thus naturally a very big deal for the setting. &nbsp;It’s not just canonical fan wank. It’s good world building.
