  It's only because of the modern bells & whistles features that makes this exorbitant and ridiculous. Many a science school student has created these for people in remote African regions and they're nothing more than a very tall clay formed pot with a slightly bell shaped profile and they work just fine. Old school though, no pumps.

  This system looks like a viable option for those with few other options.  I catch and store rainwater off my house, garage, and shed.  If our well ever fails I'll look into a water purification system and use it for us, not just plants and birdbaths.  I beleive one needs to look at all of their available options and do what's right for you.
