We got to attack our stockings first, but we had to wait for mom and dad to be awake and have their coffee before we could touch the presents

When kids were kids, parents acted like parents and families came together for the right reason. With only 3 major networks, the tv was filled with Christmas specials, movies and each tv series had Christmas in their program. You could celebrate Christmas at your school, shows were put on by the children and the word Christmas could actually be spoken. All the stores and the streets in the downtown were all decorated. We had a silver aluminum tree with the color wheel. The wheel not only lit the tree with changing color but also the corner wall and drapes too. With all the house lights off and the glow of the tv, the color wheel has no substitute. I actually enjoyed going to grade school in the month of December because our teacher would buy a real tree for our classroom, we walked two blocks away during school and dragged it back, no parent note or armed guard needed. We made tree decorations and took them home before Christmas break, and yes, it was called Christmas Vacation at my school district. We also made pictures of trees, Santa, Rudolph, etc on colored construction paper with cotton balls for trim, which were hung all around the classroom. How I miss the construction paper, glue and glitter, now kids have to buy everything. Once we got home my mom helped us make a paper chain and hung in our house. I was the youngest of 6 kids, and I couldn’t wait for the Sears and Montgomery Ward Christmas catalogs. We all got a dollar amount so we looked thru the catalog, circled the toys we liked. Then my mom would add up, my choices were always too much so I had to narrow it down, that was so hard to do. My mom would always buy a little more for each of us to have surprises too. My mom had a Christmas fund and saved all year long. My mom cooked all of the food from scratch, real mashed potatoes, homemade gravy, about 20 different kinds of cookies, pies, cranberry and banana nut breads and punch. No one cooks from complete scratch an entire holiday meal anymore, now I know why my mom was so exhausted at Christmas, I appreciate her hard work now that I’m an adult, but she sure made it feel special, a feeling I can’t even get close too anymore. My mom is 91 1/2 yrs old now and long gone from hosting and cooking, I thank her all the time for making the holidays so special with so little money. I would trade anything to go back even for just one more day!

Everyone being together was the best! Then we visited relatives to spend time with them too. Even though we didn’t have much, we didn’t know that. Mom made us feel like we were very lucky to have what we had and you appreciate everything you get no matter how small. I loved it!

It’s fascinating how a video can remind you that happiness is often found in the little things. Very atmospheric and beautifully told – I’d love to see more like this.
