  Retired botanist here always had a special place in my heart for the mycelium. Knew it had so much potential. And I’m thinking mushroom mycelium in the natural world being used for items that we can use is just the tip of the iceberg. The future is amazing.

  Hungarians have been making and wearing hats made of mushroom leather for hundreds of years, and there are still some crafters making them by hand. There&apos;s at least one YouTube video showing the process from start to finish. It&apos;s neat stuff. It would be nice to see the high tech producers of fungal products beyond food acknowledge the long history of fungal use.

  Happy to share that we did it! Nd there’s no mention of it in the video😮, but we’re now producing packaging material made from mycelium that’s cheaper than plastic — and that’s what truly matters for the industry.

  I am in my 2nd year as a PhD student in a group that focuses on fungal natural products. Fungi are quite a niche organism to study and each species has a unique chemistry profile that contain useful compounds. Some fungal metabolites have been used as electrolytes in batteries!
