I gotta say that when I started watching your videos I thought the “walk and talk” style was low effort compared to those with a background and complicated lighting. Now I love it! It feels like walking with a bud and having a conversation. Never change the format!

Back in the early 2000's Papa Johns was THE pizza chain. The old garlic butter and pepperonccini's....man oh man.

I worked for Papa John's from 2012 to 2025 so let me add some internal insight to your research. I started off as a shift lead and left as a general manager who had trained 5 other people to the general manager position. Just to give my qualifications on this .

When I first started there the company was different than any other franchise location I had worked for in fast food before. They actually CARED. We had secret shops monthly. Franchisee's received royalty reductions for hitting certain metrics. When we had annual inspections not only did they tell you what was good and what was bad, they explained WHY those bad things needed to be changed and why it mattered. The things we did mattered and how they were addressed mattered. That slowly started changing starting in 2017. Secret shops became quarterly instead of monthly, then bi-yearly, then they disappeared. Inspections were quicker, more abrupt, and went from annual to every 2 years. Feedback slowed down then almost completely stopped.

Then there was inside the store. We stopped cutting our vegetables fresh every day and they started coming to us precut in bags. Then the quality of our chicken dropped A LOT. Our wings went from looking like steroid ridden bodybuilder chickens to scrawny mofos. Then the sauce stopped coming in cans and started showing up in bags. We stopped hand tossing the dough and started using dough press machines.

Also quality checks stopped happening. It used to be that if a driver opened up a box to check their order and thought the quality was bad they could get it remade, no questions asked. That turned into drivers not even checking the orders anymore.

Then the Uber Eats and doordash epidemic. People ordering through them all the time, getting orders than took sometimes 2 hours to get to the customer through no fault of ours, bad service on the delivery. Hell I ever had one dasher deliver a pizza, IN THE RAIN, with no bag and my customer got a thoroughly drenched pizza box with matching pizza. The bane of my existence I swear.

Then the rising labor costs. When I first started our store would routinely have 5 people working inside and 11 to 13 drivers on a Friday night. When I left we had 3 people working inside and ONE driver. That is not a typo. ONE driver. Everyone is doordashing their orders now. Also the labor cost is the same now for those 4 people as it used to be for 15 people prior due to the $20 minimum wage. It's not possible to keep up and still have a small profit margin. My owner was barely breaking even at our location for a whole year after than hit. Only by raising prices a little did he start to make a profit.

So it wasn't all their own fault, but a lot of it was. I used to love working there because they actually cared about their stores. But 8 years in that fell by the wayside. And that's the beginning of the end. Sadly.

Also John needs to shut his mouth. I think we all know that!!! Lol

I met John when he had only three locations. He came in where I was working, a Radio Shack store, offering us a free pizza. We took him up on the offer of course, and after tasting it and seeing how the shops were being run, I knew he would be a success.

There's just no comparison between the flavor of Domino's crust and Papa John's crust. It's really amazing how Domino's has turned it around and started producing really good tasting pizza again. I'm addicted to their barbecue chicken.

All the fast food pizza chains suck these days. They all went cheap on ingredients. I feel like it’s 1980 again when frozen pizza had that unmeltable synthetic plastic cheese. Sad cause I’ve always loved pizza.

My lady saw a Papa John's commercial on tv one time and said "that man does Coke!"

The "downfall" came from like some commenters mentioned: changing ingredients as a rebrand which essentially made their pizza worse. When prices also started to rise with a sharp drop in quality; people stopped buying.
